However, the researchers found it took more than seven months before the limb was fully mummified. He claimed the process took just 70 days in natron, while other historical texts, such as Diodorus Siculus from the first century BC, claimed the body was left in natron for between 30 and 40 days. Most of what is known about ancient Egyptian mummification comes from the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, who lived during the fifth century BC. However, they found the process took far longer than historical records claim. ![]() By placing one of the legs into a bath of natron – a naturally occurring combination of salt and sodium bicarbonate used by the ancient Egyptians – they managed to mummify the leg. ![]()
